Khmer New Year 2020

BlogPost from 20th of April 2020

Khmer New Year is the name of the Cambodian holiday that celebrates the New Year. The holiday lasts for three days beginning on New Year´s Day, around the 13th of April. It is one of the most important celebrations for the Cambodian people. It marks the end of the harvesting season, when farmers enjoy the fruits of their labor before the rainy season begins.

This year was very different. To curb the spread of COVID-19 the Cambodian government announced that this years celebration would be canceled. A travel ban was even implemented to make sure everyone just stayed in in their own provinces. The Cambodian people seem to respect the decisions made, and have just had small celebrations with their close families at home.

Eline made her own Khmer New Year decorations, and with these photos we wish our Cambodian family and all Cambodian people a Happy Khmer New Year (even though this is a late post, hehe).
