Babel’s environmental initiatives

  • By replacing straws with reusable Bamboo straws in our restaurant, we save the Cambodian countryside around 13.200 plastic straws every year.

  • By offering free water for refill for our guests we are helping to reduce the number of 4,6 million plastic bottles ending up in the Cambodian countryside MONTHLY as a result of tourism.

  • We have replaced plastic bags with biodegradable bags from Cleanbodia.

  • Our take away boxes and take away cutlery are all compostable.

  • We have replaced all plastic-wrapped soap-bars in the rooms with refillable soap dispensers that we refill with Cambodian Eco-friendly soap from Kambio nature.

  • We encourage our guests to cut their use of plastic while traveling by giving simple tips in our information book in all the rooms, and suggesting that they pay a visit to Babel Eco-shop.

  • We encourage our guests to recycle and offer a separate bin for plastic in all the rooms.

  • We recycle our soft plastic to HUSK Cambodia – an amazing project who makes wall for houses out of plastic bottles filled with soft plastic.

  • We used to recycle plastic bags from guests to Rehash Trash. Unfortunately Rehash Trash didn’t survive Coivid19, and had to close down the business in 2020. This wonderful project not only made great products and cleaned up the environment, they also empowered the lives of mothers and their families. We hope other solutions like this will pop up in Siem Reap in the near future.

  • We recycle plastic containers and glass jars in our Eco-shop, and provide them for free for our guests who can use them for refill of necessities.

  • We recycle paper and our used newspapers in our restaurants and in Babel Eco-shop.

  • We arrange regularly garbage-picking events to clean up the streets and raise awareness.

  • We bring our own bags when we go out to buy stuff for Babel.

  • We require our food suppliers to use reusable bags (not plastic) for food deliveries.

  • We minimize our carbon footprint by striving to source everything from room decorations to food and drinks locally.

  • Food waste is given to a local family for the pigs at their farm

  • We used to donate our used cooking oil to Naga Earth who made bio diesel of it. Unfortunately Naga Earth didn’t survive Covid19, and had to close down in 2020. Hopefully other solutions like this will pop up in the near future. As soon as it does, we can continue to run our Generator with bio diesel.

  • We have regularly training and workshops with our staff and Tuk Tuk drivers to learn about the growing problem with litter in Cambodia, and what we can do to reduce our impact. This is a very important part of Babel’s philosophy.
